Modern Languages
Modern languages are thriving at Bramcote. Pupils have the benefit of an early start, in-depth study and a variety of experience – all in a purposeful and enjoyable learning environment.

As soon as children arrive at Bramcote they begin studying French. In Pre-Prep and junior form French lessons pupils play games, sing songs and act out conversations as they develop their speaking and listening skills. Written French is introduced in Year 5 and by the time pupils transfer to senior schools at the age of 13 they are able to write accurate and detailed French on a wide range of topics. They can participate confidently in conversations and are suitable equipped for trips abroad to French speaking countries.

The subject enjoys a high profile throughout the School. Senior pupils (Years 6, 7 and 8) have 5 or 6 lessons per week and additional support is available through tutorials – including specific examination coaching. There is a French cinema club on a Wednesday evening, which attracts an audience from across the age range. Pupils particularly enjoy using their French for real on the Form VI History trip to the Somme battlefields and the school ski trip to Châtel.

We all learn languages most effectively in differing ways and this is reflected in the French classroom at Bramcote. A typical lesson could include team games using the interactive whiteboard, a story or news report, a song and more traditional tasks such as a dictation or a good old-fashioned vocabulary test! In their final two years at Bramcote, pupils attend weekly reading classes where they receive individual tuition in reading comprehension and accent training.

Our firm commitment to the teaching of French is reflected in the school’s examination results. Pupils invariable reach a high standard in the subject and perform very well in the Common Entrance and Scholarship Examinations. They find themselves more than adequately prepared for further study at their senior school, with many taking up a second modern foreign language.

At Bramcote there is an opportunity to taste other languages. German and Spanish are currently offered as part of the school’s extra-curricular programme.
