The main aim of History teaching at Bramcote is to make sure that the children enjoy the subject and develop a lasting interest in it. With this in mind the department to makes the lessons exciting and stimulating with the emphasis at the junior end of the school on lively stories from British and world history and with plenty of opportunity for pupil participation in activities such as role play and project work. In the last two years the focus is more on common entrance and Scholarship exams and, while the children are thoroughly prepared for these external tests, there is hopefully still time to discuss aspects of history away from the syllabus.
While the priority in the lessons is often on presenting the material in an enthusiastic and lively manner to engage and interest the children there is also plenty of emphasis on making sure that they develop core skills such as a sound knowledge of key events in history (mainly British although topics like the Egyptians and ancient Greeks are studies), that they understand important concepts such as chronology and that they understand historical terms such as bias and prejudice.
The written work takes various different forms. At the junior end of the school it can be work sheet based but as the children move up the school there is greater emphasis on source analysis (in particular, making sure that children are able to interpret sources intelligently and appreciate that there are different types of historical evidence) and constructing longer answers such as essays.
During their time at Bramcote children will also go on a number of historical trips ranging, for example, from visits to Scarborough castle and Hadrian’s wall to a four day trip to the First World War battlefields for the final year.
