To help children to become literate in a way that is purposeful and pleasurable, to be able to respond appreciatively to a range of word based cultural activities, to have confidence in their opinions, to be able to argue a case and to have a fluency coherence and appropriateness of language with which to enter any discussion on a range of topics.
Years 3 and 4
To focus on reading and the mechanical skill of handwriting. Where appropriate, to deal with spelling and punctuation but in a pleasurable way with the emphasis on the enjoyment of using language.
Year 5
To work towards greater fluency, accuracy and expression in the reading. More emphasis on writing and showing how the reading skills can be used in the writing.
Year 6
To work towards improving the style of the written work in the belief that children become writers through writing, but that specific work on certain types of connectives can nudge that process forward.
Year 7
More work on writing using both style and punctuation as tools for meaning. More exposure to more complex literature requiring a more detailed analysis.
Year 8
To encourage children to have ideas about the work they do, to have confidence in those ideas through being able to argue a case, and to develop a suitable language to be used in discussion or on paper.
