Rugby

The school's Director of Rugby is a fully qualified coach and parents with an interest in the sport are often encouraged to help with refereeing and coaching. As well as the usual fixtures with other schools, junior pupils take part in tag rugby and rugby league events organised by the Primary Schools' Sports Association.

Under 9 rugby vs. Terrington (h)

After an epic 26 try thriller in the last encounter between the schools the Bramcote boys were eagerly awaiting the return fixture with local rivals, Terrington. Their enthusiasm was dimmed slightly in the morning when they heard that big forward Jack Chafer was ill but Terrington kindly lent us a good player to make the teams up to 8-a-side and a predictably tight match ensued. There was little to choose between the sides as one team scored only for the other to reply. However Bramcote had Edward Lockwood who looked dangerous every time he was involved and his six tries were really the difference in the end as Bramcote won 7-6. Edward was obviously the star man but he was well supported by scrum half James Naylor who scored two tries and William Watts who worked very hard in the forwards and who really looked like he understood how to ruck. Stephen Davison did plenty of good things and wasn't afraid to take on the bigger Terrington boys while Donny Lee showed how much he had improved since the term began.

A good match in which both teams played in the right spirit and who did well to keep going despite the freezing wind whcih swept across the Bramcote field.

Under 11 Primary schools rugby league

vs. Gladstone Road Lost 1-2

vs. Newby Won 3-1

vs. Scarborough College Drew 2-2

vs. Barrowcliffe Won 3-2

The Bramcote Under 11 rugby league side competed well at the annual winter cup held at Scarborough College. They were placed in the tougher group and knew that the first game against eventual cup winners Gladstone Road was crucial to the chances of getting to the final as group winners. Unfortunately we went down to a narrow defeat and although there were good performances in the rest of the matches we did not qualify for the final. There were several good performances from Bramcote players - Matthew Bowman and Harry Anderson ran well and looked a constant threat to the opposition every time they got the ball while skipper Max Bingham tackled brilliantly against much bigger boys. Under 10s Benji Wilson and Freddie Cade led the line well in defence and were  always first up on the ball carrier.

Under 9 rugby tournament at Cundall Manor

The Under 9 Bramcote rugby team won two games, lost two games and drew one match in an extremely competitive and high quality tournament at Cundall Manor. Having been drawn in the tougher of the two groups the team made a slow start against a strong Barnard Castle side but then went on to beat Ampleforth and Moorlands and draw with Stonyhurst. They also out up a brave performance against eventual winners Cundall - the match was level at 1-1 at half time before Cundall's greater size and power proved decisive. In the end the team finished 3rd in the group which was an excellent effort and which showed the boys could compete with some of the best schools in the area. The whole team played well and certainly improved as the afternoon went on but special mention should be made of Edward Lockwood who was outstnding and was probably one of the best players at the tournament.

Under 11 Rugby v. Terrington

The scoreline loks a bit depressing but, in fact, this was a much improved performance from the combined Bramcote and Woodleigh sides. Tries were conceded and converted, but for much of the game the combined side competed pretty well with a bigger and more experienced Terrington outfit who only really looked much superior when they moved the ball wide and away from the forward exchanges which were relatively even. In the forwards Max Bingham and Benjie Wilson never gave up and recycled the ball effectively as well as displaying some good clearing and rucking skills while at scrum half Harry Anderson did his best to get the team moving forward with a selection of probing runs and astute kicks. The tackling was much better (the Woodleigh boys set a great example) and the whole game was much more enjoyable than the Moorlands match.

Under 11 Rugby v. Moorlands (a)

A very competent Moorlands side proved too strong for an inexperienced Bramcote/ Woodleigh team who were having their first competitive run out of the season. Playing 10-a-side on a huge full size pitch with temperatures in the high twenties the combined side were rarely in the game as little ball was won and when Moorlands had the ball their pace and skill meant that the home side always looked likely to score. No one gave up but there was obviously a gulf in quality between the sides.

Under 13 Rugby v. Moorlands (a)

Playing on their own for the first time this term the Bramcote senior team made light of the stifling heat to record an encouraging victory. It was particularly good to see Oliver Williams running hard and both Will Newitt and Harry Exley-Moore scoring their first tries for the 1st XV.

24th September, 2011

1st XV v. Scarborough College (a)

After a successful outing in the training tournament at SMA, the newly formed team made up of boys from Bramcote and Woodleigh had their first competitive run out against a big and typically determined College side. As expected the Bramcote forwards led by Toby Wrightson provided some good ball which was well used by the Woodleigh backs and Charlie Watts who had an impressive outing in the centre. The handling in the backs enabled Charlie Cowen to score  acouple of good tries whcih established a healthy lead but the College side were alsways dangerous and their imprsseive No.8 scored three times to keep them in the game. The only black spot on an otherwise enjoyable afternoon was an injury to Spanish debutant, Pablo, whose obvious enthusiasm for the game was curtailed by a shoulder injury.
