Ampleforth Cross Country
What better way to start the sporting fixture list after a 3 week spell of gastronomic delights and chocolate than with a cross-country race over the hills and through the woods at Ampleforth? Who better to take the keen and enthusiastic athletes than the finely tuned figure of athleticism and fitness Mr Wilkie! This then was our introduction to the fixture list of the Spring Term 2012.
After a busy morning of lessons 4 girls and 4 boys boarded the bus armed with their nutritious packed lunch – a tuna sandwich, bag of crisps, chocolate biscuit and piece of fruit and set out for Ampleforth. Mr Wilkie’s packed lunch was even without pork pie, presumably to set a good example of healthy eating when running is concerned!
After watching the junior race start and finish it was the turn of the seniors. (Our juniors were unable to take part as they were in Leeds watching a production of the musical Annie.)
Following tactical advice from Mr Wilkie, (please don’t get lost, make sure you can see the runner in front of you) it was time for action as they apprehensively lined up with well in excess of 100 pupils. All our runners did themselves credit on what is a demanding course (so I have been told!). Beth McClarron was our first girl home in a creditable place soon followed by Maggie Kalilani, Ellen Wilson and Georgina Deri. In the boys event William Newitt ran superbly to finish in 16th place. A little further down the field Charlie Cowen ran well as did Harry Exley-Moore and Josh Kidger.
All the runners ran well and I think in a strange sort of way enjoyed the challenge.
Back to the Pork Pie and cheese!
