Healthy Eating

A well balanced and nutritious diet is essential to enable children to take an active part in the busy Bramcote day.

Healthy Eating

“Meals are cooked inhouse – good old-fashioned fare served in a good old-fashioned dining room, to staff and children with good old-fashioned manners and grace in Latin”.
The Good Schools’ Guide

Our kitchen staff work hard to produce good, healthy food that the children will enjoy. Menus are planned around fresh, seasonal products with the emphasis on locally sourced food.

Water is available to drink throughout the day from the chilled water dispenser.

Children requiring a special diet or those with food allergies are always catered for, although we try to avoid encouraging ‘fussy eaters’. Bramcote operates a ‘No Nut’ policy throughout the school and all parents are asked to ensure that children do not bring food back to school containing nuts.

Breakfast

There is always a choice of healthy cereals, natural and fruit yoghurts, fresh fruit and toast. A different hot breakfast is available each day. Water, semi-skimmed milk, fruit juice and tea are always available to drink and fruit smoothies are a popular addition on some days.

Mid-morning Break

A biscuit and a drink of fruit squash are available along with a choice of fresh fruit. When it is cold, hot drinks are sometimes offered.

Lunch

Children enjoy traditional favourites such as cottage pie, sausage and mash, roast beef and Yorkshire puddings and fish and chips along with more contemporary dishes such as curries, pasta bakes, chilli con carne and stir fries. There is always a salad bar available but children are encouraged to try the hot meal. Good old-fashioned puddings such as syrup sponge and custard, rice pudding and apple crumble are always popular and a selection of fresh fruit is available. Jugs of water are provided on each table and children are encouraged to have a drink with their meal.
At Bramcote, we consider it important that the children and staff sit down together to enjoy the main meal of the day in a family-like atmosphere. Children sit at tables  headed by a member of staff who serves the food. As well as enjoying a nutritious meal, children learn the importance of good manners and conversation. The children take responsibility for clearing the tables after meals on a rota basis.
Children in Nursery and Pre-Prep eat their lunch in a similar way, but in a smaller and quieter dining room more suited to their age.

Afternoon Break

A drink of fruit squash and a selection of fresh fruit are available.

Tea

A hot dish, including favourites such as chicken fajitas, pasta bake, pizza, filled jacket potatoes, and homemade soup, is offered each day. In addition, there is plenty of wholemeal and white bread with a variety of spreads. Homemade cakes and biscuits are always popular and a selection of fresh fruit is on offer. Water, semi-skimmed milk and tea are available to drink.
