Listed are the most frequently asked questions we receive from parents. Although we may not answer all of your questions here, should you need more answers to your queries please do not hesitate to contact us and we will gladly help get the answers you need.
Why choose a Boarding School for your child?
As well as the tangible benefits such as excellent academics, sports and extracurricular activities, a boarding school gives the child the personal growth and confidence only obtained from living away from home. The close bonds between the community of friends built up over the school years is something you have to experience to appreciate.
How do I apply for my child to get a school place?
Make sure your admissions folder is completed well before the deadline. We are more than happy to assist you in the completion of this and discuss any issues or questions you might have. We realise that this is a massive decision for you and family and we want to make sure that you’re 100% confident in us and Bramcote school
Can I pay the tuition fees in monthly instalments or do I have to pay all in full?
Fees are due in advance at the beginning of each term but we can arrange financial packages to spread the cost of the fees in certain circumstances.
Can I get financial aid to send my child to Bramcote School?
If your family meets certain means tests they could qualify for free education or part payment. Apply for financial aid well in advance as there is a limited pool of funds for each year.
Are children allowed off the school campus at any time?
Children can only leave the school premises when they have full permission from the school or parents. Activities organised by the school will always be fully supervised by a teacher.
What are the procedures for mobile phones?
Mobile phones are allowed on the campus but access to them is restricted to certain times during the day or night.
Can I contact my child at anytime?
If you need to contact your child you can call the school line anytime and we will get a message to your child as soon as possible.
What experience do the teachers have?
All our staff are fully qualified teachers and have undergone a rigorous interview system to achieve to be offered the post. Bramcote has an excellent reputation for teaching and most teachers see us a career step forward and as such we tend to attract the best. Many teachers stay with us a long time but we also see some leaving us to move on to progress their careers at larger schools – which is something that we’re proud of.
Is there time set aside for the parent and teachers to discuss the my child’s progress?
You are welcome to contact the Headmaster at any time to discuss your child’s progress, or you can join us on a Wednesday or Saturday afternoon in the Headmaster’s drawing room where you will have the opportunity to chat informally with the staff.
How is discipline handled?
Here at Bramcote we believe in natural and non-punitive consequences for inappropriate behavior. Our mission is one of encouraging good behavior rather than punishing bad. We believe this method has a longer lasting and more positive outcome and we’re pleased to say that our pupils are recognised as being well balanced and well mannered.
Does the school have an outdoor space and how often is it used?
We have over seven acres of land in the delightful South Cliff area of Scarborough. With a large field at the back where most sports are played. The area is renowned as probably the nicest part of Scarborough and has an air of calmness and sophistication which only enhances the school.
What is the policy for taking care of sick or injured children?
If a child is injured or ill we have in-house trained and qualified medical staff that can treat your child, allowing you to feel comfortable knowing that your child is in good hands. Our staff are also trained to spot more potentially dangerous situations and in such circumstances will either get them to a local GP’s, arrange a school visit or get them to the local hospital without delay. Needless to say you will be contacted at the earliest opportunity should such a situation arise.
Are specific dietry requirements available?
The dietry requirements of every student is catered for, with a vegetarian menu available and a medical report taken out before the child starts school to be aware of any allergies.
How many pupils are in a classroom?
Although classroom sizes do vary – the average is very small and your child will receive plenty of one to one attention to make sure that they are encouraged to their full potential.
If my child is boarding are there times set aside for Homework?
Homework is a very important part of the school curriculum and although we don’t like to overload the children with too much we feel that highly targeted home work encourages a good work ethic and is essential to their progression. For boarders there are set and supervised areas and times for study for day pupils homework is closely monitored and marked.
What happens if my child gets homesick?
It is quite normal for a child to become homesick, especially in the early days of boarding. It is important that they tell a member of staff and remember that in the morning they will be back playing and having fun with their friends. We closely monitor all boarders and use our knowledge and experience to help them adjust to what are often new surroundings and new friends. Some will inevitably cope better than others but our experience shows that the friendly atmosphere at Bramcote often brings them round much sooner than you may expect.
How can my child contact home?
The children can contact home on the evenings or on the weekends from the available phones. Phone cards can be purchased from the school. Mobiles are allowed but only in certain areas and at certain times.
How often can we see our child during the term?
You can phone the school to organise a time to come and visit your child. There are many events throughout the year that you are welcome to come along to where you can spend time with your child. Whilst we strongly support family involvement, it is important to give your child time to settle into their new surroundings and give them time to bond and make new friends.
